Bad Weather Contingency Plans

As the weather seems to be getting chillier now and the evenings darker I thought it was a good time to remind you of our bad weather contingency plans in the unlikely event of the school having to close due to bad weather.

If the decision is made to close the school early in the morning, usually following a heavy overnight snowfall, it will be announced on Radio Rutland (107.2 & 97.4 FM) and the school website will be updated as early as possible.  The RCC website also carries this information. We will also ensure the school office is manned by staff who live in Langham. We would be grateful however if you could check the school website or listen for radio announcements first and keep calls to the school to a minimum, in order to keep the lines as clear as possible for emergency calls.

The telephone number of the bus company, should you need to contact them is Coach and Bus Services 07921 528400.

If, as a result of a heavy snowfall during the day, we decide to close the school early or send the children who travel to Langham by bus home early, we will need to contact all our families, especially those of children who use the bus. It is therefore vital that we have up to date contact details in the office, with several alternative contacts and numbers and, if appropriate, permission for your child to go to a friend’s house if you are not at home.

The use of electronic communication has also proved a great help in these circumstances previously, especially when we closed the school early. If you are already signed up to receive email communication from the school please ensure you keep these details up to date. If you are not signed up but would be happy to receive emails, please speak to Mrs Burgin in the school office.

I must emphasise how important it is to have these contingency plans in place – we don’t want to have children stranded at school overnight, and of course we cannot send children home if you have not been contacted, or have not given permission for your child to go to a friend’s house if you are not at home.

We would also be grateful if you could ensure your child has a coat in school at all times. We do take the children outside at breaktime regardless of the weather, as they really need fresh air and a chance to run around and let off steam. It is therefore essential that children have suitable outdoor wear in school.
